Norman Reedus has announced the end of an era for The Walking Dead as the latest chapter of the zombie franchise approaches the horizon. Reedus has portrayed Daryl in the series since season 1 of the original show, taking on the role in 2010. Since then, he's been a mainstay of the franchise through The Walking Dead series finale.

Since the original show's ending, he's reprized his role in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which sees his title character in both France and Spain, trying to return home to America. The series has been well-received by critics and audiences. However, it was announced earlier this year that Daryl Dixon season 4 will bring an end to the spinoff.

Now, Reedus has taken to X, confirmed that filming for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 has come to a close. The actor expressed gratitude for being able to play Daryl for so long, thanking fans of the franchise for their continued support. Check out what Reedus had to say about the filming wrap below:

Season 4 is confirmed to be wrapping up this chapter of Daryl's story, alongside Carol (Melissa McBride), who joined him on his travels starting with season 2. Daryl Dixon season 3 ended with the pair's boat getting blown up by Fede (Óscar Jaenada), once again stranding them in Spain. However, Codron (Romain Levi) saw the explosion, signaling an upcoming reunion.

So far, it's unclear if season 4 will be the last of Daryl and Carol in The Walking Dead universe. Chief content officer Scott Gimple has previously expressed interest in bringing the core survivors of the sequel shows together again at some point. While a crossover hasn't been confirmed, it seems likely Daryl won't be gone from the franchise for good.

When the spinoff does end, though, it will leave Dead City season 3 as the only other upcoming season of the franchise. As of writing, the only other announced show is More Tales from The Walking Dead Universe, although there have been no development updates since 2023. This makes Daryl Dixon one of two last bastions from the original series.

Reedus' announcement may end an era of The Walking Dead, but it also signifies a new chapter of the series that will begin. Whether Daryl and Carol will be part of that future remains unclear. But, with the spinoff series finally coming to a close, their journey overseas will too, offering finality to their struggles to get home.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 arrives on AMC and AMC+ in 2026.
