The Only Breaking Bad Show Vince Gilligan Was Not Involved With

Vince Gilligan's name is synonymous with the Breaking Bad franchise, but there's one show in the universe he created that he is not attached to.

Vince Gilligan made TV history when he created Breaking Bad, the iconic crime drama series that spawned a franchise, though there's one show in Walter White's universe that Gilligan was never a part of. Beyond Walt, Breaking Bad was full of rich characters, and the world Gilligan created naturally lent itself to acclaimed spinoff series Better Call Saul and the 2019 sequel film, El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.

Gilligan is back in the pop culture conversation again with the release of his Apple TV sci-fi series, Pluribus. Better Call Saul's Rhea Seehorn leads the Pluribus cast as Carol Sturka, one of the only people in the world immune to a virus called "the Joining," which infects its inhabitants with extreme happiness.

Though many are clamoring for another Breaking Bad show, it doesn't appear that one will be happening anytime soon, especially as Pluribus is enjoying such critical acclaim can't be said for a certain Breaking Bad show that Gilligan was smart enough not to touch.

Vince Gilligan Was Not Involved With Slippin' Jimmy

A Breaking Bad show even most diehard fans didn't know existed, Slippin' Jimmy is an animated Better Call Saul prequel that chronicles the hijinks of a young Jimmy McGill in Cicero, Illinois. The show spanned six eight- to 10-minute episodes, with AMC releasing Slippin' Jimmy in 2022 to coincide with the finale of Better Call Saul season 6's first half.

While Vince Gilligan is the sole creator of Breaking Bad and he co-created Better Call Saul with Peter Gould, he is not attached to Slippin' Jimmy in any way, shape, or form. Rather, Slippin' Jimmy was developed by Ariel Levine and Kathleen Williams-Foshee, who were also behind other Better Call Saul short-form spinoffs like the Employee Training series.

Employee Training was released in tandem with Better Call Saul seasons 3 through 6 and starred a major character in mock corporate training videos. While Employee Training was a hit with fans and critics alike and even won Emmys, Slippin' Jimmy was critically panned.

Gilligan has never publicly commented on the Slippin' Jimmy series, and this is likely because he wants to forget it even existed. While Reddit users have reported that Gould referred to the animated show as "fun" on a podcast, this is the most attention it's received from the core Breaking Bad creative team, and hopefully, it'll stay that way.

It's Hard To Believe That Slippin' Jimmy Is A Real Show

Breaking Bad will go down in history as one of the best TV shows of all time, and through Better Call Saul, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould proved that there was fertile ground for further exploring these complex characters. That's what makes Slippin' Jimmy such an unpleasant anomaly.

With its 1970s Saturday morning cartoon-style animation, Slippin' Jimmy quite literally turned Jimmy McGill, aka Saul Goodman, into a cartoon character. The show reduced Jimmy's formative years and the crimes he committed to wacky misadventures that tonally clashed with the nuanced character study that was Better Call Saul.

Better Call Saul could certainly be funny, and much of the show's humor came from Jimmy's various schemes. However, as the story progressed, the series exposed more and more of the broken man behind the razzle-dazzle.

The show does not conclude with Saul riding off into the sunset after the ultimate con job, but rather, Better Call Saul's ending is one of the most tragic series finales in recent memory. This all the more makes Slippin' Jimmy an insult to not only the character but the entire Breaking Bad universe that Gilligan created.
